Greenkey have produced a really useful piece of kit with this aerator. Simple but very effective
throughout the spring and summer months occasional use of this tool will work wonders allowing air and water to reach those all important roots, especially if your lawn receives a lot of use, which will compact the surface layers.
In summer , if we ever get a prolonged period of sun, the combined effect will be to dry out and brown the grass and stop any water there is reaching down into the root system. Water well in these conditions in the evening, don’t forget too that it will be a lot harder for any aeration tool to penetrate and do its work, if the surface is rock hard.
Have a read about the effects of compacted soil and the need to “wet” the soil to re enable absorption.
The Greenkey tool has 30 X 2 inch ( 45 mm ) spikes and has a 12 inch wide coverage ( 300mm)
What are the alternatives?
Well a small garden lawn can be done with a garden fork, but having done this many times, I can assure you, the backache just isnt worth the saving. The results with the proper tool are good and consistent and the work is a lot easier.
These Aerating shoes can be a help and your weight makes penetrating the surface easier, but its not for a medium or large lawn
