For the larger area lawns or where electric power is not easily available, petrol is the answer. The starting problems and extreme noise are now mainly in the past, modern lightweight 2 stroke engines are minimal maintenance and produce lots of power compared to even the best of the electric mowers. From a safety perspective, they dont have a cable to cut through, so no shock hazard but the blades can be left spinning without the user present on some models so do check! Wise also to use ear defenders, even though the latest models using 4 stroke engines are not so loud now, long term use by gardeners or professionals will give some reduction in hearing so always wear them.
